Assembly |
In the box you get two bags of plastic pieces, on red and one blue.
You also get this pieces card. Each piece of cardboard pops out and slides into the plastic holder above. It takes about 10 minutes to assemble all the pieces. My original copy of Stratego came with plastic pieces with the rank pre printed on them and I was confused why this copy required such assembly before you can play. Then a memory came to me. After beating my older brother for the third consecutive time he had a tantrum and actually marked the back of the “Field Marshal” pieces with scratches. This effectively made the copy of the game unplayable. We got around this problem by pacing sticky tape on the back of every piece, making them all uniform again. Separately, a clever player might be able to notice and memorize very subtle differences in the plastic pieces, even if they aren't deliberately marked, giving an unfair advantage in play. Both problems are solved by the ability to interchange the rank of any plastic piece with any other. At the start of each game the Flag, Field Marshal and General pieces could be swapped with any random piece to ensure there is no cheating going on. I found this a surprising improvement.
Another problem with our old set was that the red plastic pieces when lit from behind could be seen through just enough to determine the rank. The cardboard makes this impossible as it is not translucent at all.. |
